At the Republican People's Party's (CHP) 21st Extraordinary Convention, Antalya Muratpaşa Mayor Ümit Uysal and former MP Berhan Şimşek had announced their candidacies against CHP leader Özgür Özel. However, Uysal withdrew from the race. It was alleged that Şimşek failed to reach the required number of signatures.
While Berhan Şimşek made a statement claiming he had collected 97 signatures, an argument he had with Özgür Özel in the convention hall became a major topic of discussion. In the footage shared by Hilal Köylü for Serbestiyet, it was seen that Şimşek, who complained to Özel for missing the application deadline, was being calmed down by the CHP leader. Özel hugged Şimşek in an attempt to appease him.
