Treasury and Finance Minister Şimşek's 'interest-bearing' cigarette proposal: 'You would earn 147 thousand liras'
Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek gave a striking example of savings through cigarette consumption during his speech at the Halkbank Gençİz Summit in Istanbul.
Minister Şimşek called on citizens regarding the importance of saving, emphasizing that small savings can create a significant impact in the long term.
Şimşek stated, "The average pack of cigarettes in Turkey is 75.24 TL. The annual cost for someone who smokes one pack a day is 27 thousand 367 TL.
If you save this money by not smoking for one year and put it into a deposit account at today's interest rates for 5 years, you could earn 147 thousand TL" he said.

Şimşek called on citizens regarding the importance of saving. By using cigarette consumption as an example, he stated that individuals could both protect their health and strengthen their financial position by controlling unnecessary expenses.

In his speech, Minister Şimşek also touched upon the process of gathering information regarding cigarette prices, noting that he had asked his assistant to research the cost of cigarettes.
Pointing out that the average price is 75.24 TL, Şimşek said, "Giving up this expense for one year and investing the savings can make a big difference" he said.
