Village submerged: Only the minaret remains
As the village of Karakurt in the Sarıkamış district of Kars was submerged, only the mosque's minaret remained from the village.
Kars’ın Sarıkamış district, the Karakurt village, which was evacuated following the impoundment of the Karakurt Dam, has seen its church, old village houses, and village mosque submerged, with only the minaret of the 200-household village remaining visible to cameras.
The minaret of the Karakurt village mosque, which remains above the water, is attracting the attention of citizens. Citizens recording the mosque minaret with their mobile phones stated that their memories, along with the village, have been submerged.
“OUR VILLAGE IS UNDERWATER”
Expressing that their village has been buried under the waters, citizens said, “This is our Karakurt village; only the mosque remains from the village. The entire village is underwater, and only the mosque's minaret is visible on the water's surface. We came, we saw, we were saddened, we felt sorrow. Our village, the village where we grew up and walked around, is underwater.”
Meanwhile, with the gates of the Karakurt Dam closed in the spring, the entire village, including trees, the old village, the churches located in the village, and old stone houses, was buried under the waters. Only the 100-year-old mosque's minaret remained on the water's surface.
