Violence by caregiver against patient in nursing home caught on camera

The incident occurred on the evening of Saturday, June 8, at a nursing home located in Kavacık, Beykoz.

According to allegations, caregiver Mehmet Şakir Ö. abused A.G., I.Y., and D.A.Ç., who were residents at the nursing home. Footage of these moments was recorded by citizens.

Following the footage shared on social media, teams from the Beykoz District Police Department's Public Security Bureau launched an investigation.

During the investigation, police teams went to the nursing home and took statements from the victims and the nursing home management.

Police teams detained caregiver Mehmet Şakir Ö. in Kavacık. The suspect, whose statement was taken at the police station, was referred to the courthouse on charges of property damage and causing injury by negligence. The suspect was arrested and sent to prison.

STATEMENT FROM THE MINISTRY

The Ministry of Family and Social Services announced that administrative and judicial proceedings have been initiated regarding reports of staff at a private nursing home in Istanbul abusing elderly residents. In a post shared on the Ministry's social media account, it was stated, "Following the incident that occurred at a private nursing home and elderly care center in Istanbul, teams affiliated with our provincial directorate immediately went to the center and conducted inspections.

A judicial and administrative investigation has been launched into the incident, and the employment contract of the staff member involved, M.Ş.Ö., has been terminated by the institution. Health examinations of the nursing home residents who were victims of the incident were conducted after their statements were taken.

The necessary process regarding the institution will be carried out according to the results of the administrative investigation initiated by our Ministry. We will also closely follow the legal process initiated regarding the staff member who was arrested after being detained by police units," the statement said.
