Warning from TurkStat: Youth population rate is sounding the alarm... 3 scenarios for 2050 and 2100
Projections regarding Turkey's youth population have revealed a worrying picture. While attention is drawn to the years 2050 and 2100, it is stated that Turkey's future is not bright, as it remains below the world average with a youth population rate of 15.1 percent.
Population projections have shown that the proportion of Turkey's youth population within the total population could fall below 10 percent in 2050 and 2100. August 12 has been celebrated as International Youth Day every year since 1999 by the decision of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly.
According to a compilation made from TurkStat and United Nations data, the world population was calculated as 8 billion 45 million 311 thousand 447 in 2023. Young people aged 15-24 make up 1 billion 243 million 194 thousand 873 of this population.
As of last year, 12 million 872 thousand 39 of Turkey's population, which was 85 million 372 thousand 377, falls within the youth population category.
Turkey is below the world average of 15.5 percent with a youth population rate of 15.1 percent.
SYRIA HAS THE HIGHEST YOUTH POPULATION
Syria was recorded as the country with the highest youth population at 24.1 percent, and Ukraine as the country with the lowest rate at 6.8 percent.
Population projections made by TurkStat based on 3 different scenarios revealed that the country's youth population rate could decline in 2050 and 2100.
MAIN SCENARIO
According to the main scenario, Turkey's youth population in 2050 is expected to be approximately 9.1 million. It is estimated that the proportion of young people in the total population will decrease to 9.66 percent during that period.
LOW SCENARIO
According to the low scenario, the proportion of the youth population, which will decrease to 8.3 million in 2050, in the total population was calculated as 9.29 percent.
HIGH SCENARIO
In the high scenario, it was predicted that the youth population would be 9.9 million and its rate would remain at 10.03 percent.
According to the main scenario within the scope of TurkStat's projections for the year 2100, it was estimated that the youth population would decrease to 7.3 million and its share in the total population would fall to 9.55 percent.
TURKEY'S YOUTH POPULATION IS DECREASING
While it is predicted in the low scenario for that year that the youth population will fall to 3.9 million and its proportion in the total population will drop to 7.2 percent, the youth population is expected to be 11.5 million and its rate to be 11.43 percent in the high scenario.
In all projections, the decrease in Turkey's youth population is noteworthy.
