Warning from YÖK to students: 'Do not trust messages promising scholarships'

The Council of Higher Education (YÖK) has warned university students against fake scholarship messages received via social media and SMS.

In a statement issued by YÖK, it was noted that it has been determined that scammers have recently been reaching out to university students using the names of institutions via SMS and social media, and having students open bank accounts under the guise of scholarship promises.

The statement, which mentioned that there have been complaints that the accounts in question are being used illegally and that money is being demanded from students, included the phrase, "It is important that our students do not trust messages sent to them promising scholarships."

The statement reminded that there is no application process for these scholarships, and that the scholarships are granted directly to students who meet certain criteria.

It was underlined that the council's official website should be followed for announcements regarding YÖK Support Scholarships.

It was emphasized that there is no student application process whatsoever for the YÖK Support Scholarship, which is provided by the Council of Higher Education to students who enroll in physics, chemistry, biology, and mathematics departments at state universities and meet certain success criteria, and students were urged not to trust SMS messages received in this regard.

Furthermore, students were warned to be cautious regarding the use of their bank accounts for illegal purposes and issues related to cyber fraud.
