Warning on 'Alexandroupoli' from Osman Pamukoğlu: 'America may demand control of the Straits in the event of a major earthquake'

Alexandroupoli (known as Dedeağaç in Turkish) in Greece is located 23 kilometers from the Turkish border as the crow flies, and 45 kilometers from the İpsala Border Gate by road. Situated near the exit point of the Dardanelles Strait to the Aegean Sea, in a region also referred to as the Gulf of Thrace, the city's name has frequently appeared on Turkey's agenda in recent years, particularly due to military shipments made by the US.

Retired Major General Osman Pamukoğlu was a guest on journalist Fatih Altaylı's YouTube channel on December 28, 2023.

In the program, Pamukoğlu also spoke about the PKK attack that resulted in 12 martyrs. Stating that the PKK would not attack in winter, Pamukoğlu said, “The PKK is methodical, very methodical. The PKK stops its operations at the end of October or the beginning of November. In April, it begins to move with light activities. That is, which group will go where, what activities they will carry out, but they never attack in winter. This is not normal; there is something else. It doesn't happen like this: they decide this evening and the PKK attacks tomorrow evening. The PKK scouted those places 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 times at least. The PKK is cautious. It's not like 'let's go and see what fate has in store for us.' If they are tracking a base or the guard rotation around an outpost, a reconnaissance squad comes. It does not exceed 2 or 3 people; they have binoculars, etc. They have paper and pens in their hands. This reconnaissance squad goes for 1 day, goes the second day, goes the third day; if the location of the machine gun they identified there has changed on the fourth day, the PKK sends another reconnaissance squad. This place has been scouted at least 1, 2, 3, 5 times, they know it. It is ready, and there is a phase of pressing the button or giving instructions for this.”

PAMUKOĞLU'S WARNING ON ALEXANDROUPOLI: AMERICA "MAY DEMAND CONTROL OF THE STRAITS"

Saying "In my opinion, the army has amassed thousands of pieces of equipment and countless helicopters" for the base in Alexandroupoli, Pamukoğlu continued his words as follows:

"After the Armistice of Mudros following World War I, the British also came to Istanbul from Alexandroupoli. Now, America is in Alexandroupoli.

This city is expecting an earthquake. In such an earthquake, America will say 'let me help' or the government will request it. The Straits are under our sovereignty, but the Straits are an international waterway. The management and administration of this place are necessary. There is something called the Straits regime; it needs to be managed. In a major earthquake, they could demand this at any moment. They could demand a Straits commission once again."
