Following the heavy rainfall that affected Şanlıurfa, a waterspout occurred on the Atatürk Dam Reservoir.
The waterspout was recorded by citizens in the Kasımkuyu neighborhood using their mobile phones.
Waterspouts generally form as a result of the following processes:
Warm and Cold Air: Waterspouts occur when warm, humid air meets cold air. When this warm air rises and combines with cold air, severe winds can form.
Initiating Rotation: Winds blowing at different directions and speeds cause air currents to rotate. This creates a circular motion.
High Humidity: If there is sufficient humidity in the environment, the rising warm air carries this moisture, supporting cloud formation.
Dew Point and High Pressure: The rising air combines with descending air and condenses. At this stage, high-pressure air interacts with low-pressure air, accelerating the formation of the waterspout.
Storms and Thunder: Under these conditions, thunderstorms form, which are ideal environments for the development of waterspouts.
Waterspouts generally form when this circular motion intensifies and rotates at a certain speed. Once this process is complete, a funnel-shaped formation appears on the surface.
