A wave of resignations has begun at the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality following Mayor Cemil Tugay's decision to join the AK Party. Deputy Mayor Zafer Levent Yıldır has stepped down from his posts, while 9 members of the City Theaters Advisory Board and poet Haydar Ergülen have also resigned from their duties.

Wave of resignations following Cemil Tugay's move to AK Party: 9 members step down

Following Cemil Tugay's move to the AK Party, a series of resignations have occurred at the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality. Deputy Mayor Zafer Levent Yıldır has resigned from his positions as Deputy Mayor and First Deputy Speaker of the Assembly, while 9 members of the City Theaters Advisory Board have also stepped down. Poet Haydar Ergülen has also resigned as Director of the Izmir International Literature Festival.

The first resignation at the municipality following Izmir Metropolitan Mayor Cemil Tugay's move to the AK Party came from Deputy Mayor Zafer Levent Yıldır. Yıldır announced that he has stepped down from his positions as Deputy Mayor of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality and First Deputy Speaker of the Assembly.

Stating that he has submitted his resignation to the relevant departments, Yıldır said, "I have submitted my resignation to the Department of Decisions and the Correspondence Unit."

9 RESIGNATION DECISIONS

Following Tugay's transition to the AK Party, 9 members of the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality City Theater Advisory Board also resigned in a joint statement. Abdülkadir Çevik, Efdal Sevinçli, Hakan Dündar, Hülya Savaş, Müjdat Albak, Orhan Alkaya, Semih Çelenk, Tamer Levent, and Zeynep Altıok Akatlı have left their board memberships.

In their joint statement, the members described Tugay's decision as one that "ignores the will of the people of Izmir and the audience." Stating that the independent structure of the City Theater must be protected, the board members expressed that they would oppose any initiatives that would hinder the theater's artistic life.

Poet Haydar Ergülen also announced that he has stepped down from his position as Director of the Izmir International Literature Festival.
