Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek had traveled to the U.S. to attend meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, where he stated, “We need to convince the local population that inflation will fall.” 

Minister Şimşek's use of the phrase 'local population' drew backlash from those living in Turkey. Expressing his reaction without naming names, MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli stated, "No one can deny that the 'müfsit' (corrupt/mischievous) mentality, which serves to devalue the Turkish nation with the expression 'local population,' is the primary culprit behind the scandals we have been exposed to in recent days."
