WHEN AND WHY DID THE KHOJALY MASSACRE HAPPEN?
In the early 1990s, the dispute between Azerbaijan and Armenia over Nagorno-Karabakh was escalating. Khojaly, which had a strategic location, was home to the only airport in the region and held great importance for Azerbaijan. The attacks, which began on the evening of February 25, 1992, escalated the following day.

HOW MANY PEOPLE LOST THEIR LIVES?
According to official data, 613 Azerbaijanis lost their lives in the attack. Among those who died were 106 women, 63 children, and 70 elderly people. 487 people were seriously injured, 1,275 people were taken prisoner, and many people went missing.

INTERNATIONAL REACTIONS TO THE KHOJALY MASSACRE
Reactions from the world public to the Khojaly Massacre remained limited. While some countries condemned the event, international organizations did not impose effective sanctions. While Turkey, Pakistan, and some other countries recognized the massacre as genocide, the United Nations and other major organizations did not take sufficient steps.
