Who is Chief Rabbi Rav İsak Haleva, where is he from, and how old was he? Why did he die?

It has been announced that Chief Rabbi of the Republic of Turkey, Rav İsak Haleva, who led the Turkish Jewish community for many years, has passed away in Istanbul at the age of 85.

The Chief Rabbinate Foundation of Turkey included the following statements in the condolence message published following Haleva's passing:

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of our esteemed elder, our Chief Rabbi Mr. Rav İsak Haleva, who always believed in the unifying power of peace and love and led our community with this belief for years."

WHO IS RAV İSAK HALEVA?

Born in 1940, Rav İsak Haleva was born in Istanbul and completed his high school education at the Beyoğlu Jewish High School. In 1961, he graduated from the Porat Yosef Theological Academy in Jerusalem with the title of Rav (Rabbi) in the fields of religious law and education.

İsak Haleva was elected as the new Chief Rabbi following an election held after the passing of Rabbi David Asseo, who had served as the religious leader of the Jewish community in Turkey for 41 years, on July 14, 2002.

Haleva began his tenure as the third Chief Rabbi of the Republic of Turkey, following Chief Rabbis Rafael Saban and David Asseo.

In addition to Turkish, İsak Haleva was fluent in Hebrew, French, English, Spanish, Ladino, and Aramaic.

While no official statement has been made regarding the cause of death of Chief Rabbi of the Republic of Turkey Rav İsak Haleva, information shared on social media suggests that it may have been due to health issues related to old age.
