Who is the detained Aykut Erdoğdu? How old is he and where is he from? Why was he detained?

Detention orders have been issued for a total of 47 people in four separate Istanbul-based corruption investigations. Former CHP deputy Aykut Erdoğdu is among those detained in the operations conducted by police teams.

WHO IS AYKUT ERDOĞDU?

Aykut Erdoğdu was born on August 28, 1972, in the Sarıkamış district of Kars. After completing his primary, secondary, and high school education in Erzurum, he graduated from the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences at Gazi University in 1993. He completed his master's degree in "Public Policy and Management" at Carnegie Mellon University in the United States.

He began his political career in the 2011 Turkish general elections as a CHP Istanbul deputy and entered the Grand National Assembly of Turkey for the first time. His areas of expertise include international accounting and auditing standards, financial analysis, financial modeling, computer modeling, and quantitative analysis.

Erdoğdu, who started his career as an intern treasury controller at the Undersecretariat of Treasury in 1995, rose to the position of chief treasury controller in the following years. He conducted various studies in the US in 2004, and in 2005, he received the internationally recognized "Certified Internal Auditor" title from the Institute of Internal Auditors in the US. During his tenure at the Undersecretariat of Treasury, he served as a chief auditor in many projects carried out with funds from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Bank, and the European Union.

WHY WAS HE DETAINED?

On May 31, 2025, new detention orders were issued in the fifth wave of the corruption investigation targeting the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. So far, no official statement has been made regarding a direct link between Aykut Erdoğdu and this investigation.
