Will it be the deer-figured sun disk? Is the Ankara Metropolitan Municipality's emblem changing?

Following the re-election of ABB Mayor Mansur Yavaş by a significant margin in the March 31 local elections, a statement has been issued regarding the demands for a change to the ABB emblem.

The statement included the following remarks:

"A PROPOSAL WILL BE MADE TO LEAVE IT TO THE PEOPLE OF ANKARA"

"Following the March 31, 2024 Local Elections, there have been numerous requests from both social media and the Başkent 153 Call Center regarding a change to the official emblem of the Ankara Metropolitan Municipality. Regarding this matter;

A simple majority is required for the Municipal Council to determine an introductory emblem, while a two-thirds (qualified) majority is required to change the current emblem.

The CHP group in the ABB Council cannot secure a two-thirds majority and cannot make a decision to change the emblem on its own.

For this reason, our administration will propose to the political party groups in the ABB Council that the decision on determining a new emblem be left to the people of Ankara through a competition."

WHAT HAD HAPPENED?

Citizens of Ankara had requested that the "deer-figured sun disk monument", which is a copy of a Hattian artifact discovered during excavations at Alacahöyük and located in Sıhhiye Square in Ankara, be used as the new emblem.

The deer-figured sun disk monument was made the symbol of the city by Mayor Vedat Dalokay in 1973 and was changed again by the municipality in 1995.
