Will the unrest in Syria trigger a new wave of migration to Turkey? A critical warning from İsmail Hakkı Pekin
Evaluating the advance of jihadist groups in Syria and the potential impact of regional developments on Turkey, former Head of the General Staff Intelligence Department İsmail Hakkı Pekin stated that a military operation in the Idlib region could lead to a migration wave of approximately 1.5 to 2 million people toward Turkey.
Jihadist groups led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which controls Idlib in Syria, have seized Aleppo from the Syrian Army.
The Assad administration announced that it had temporarily withdrawn from Aleppo to prepare for a counter-offensive.
The advance of HTS against the Assad administration in Syria was halted in Hama.
WILL THERE BE A WAVE OF MIGRATION FROM SYRIA TO TURKEY?
As clashes continue in the region, there is growing concern over whether a new wave of migration to Turkey will occur.
Former Head of the General Staff Intelligence Department İsmail Hakkı Pekin issued important warnings regarding the issue.
"A MIGRATION WAVE OF AROUND 1.5 - 2 MILLION COULD ARRIVE"
Speaking on Sözcü TV, Pekin noted the following regarding a potential new migration wave toward Turkey:
"An operation to be conducted in the Idlib region, an operation carried out by the Russians from the air and Iran from the ground—there are around 2.5 to 3 million people in that region whom Turkey has not allowed inside but has been supporting.
Their migration could begin. In other words, a migration of around 1.5 to 2 million could arrive. Turkey needs to take precautions against this now."
"TURKEY IS GETTING BOGGED DOWN FURTHER"
Stating that a regional war could occur, Pekin added:
"In reality, this war is a war of imperialism. This war is a war of those who want to create a regional war by first drawing in Syria and then Turkey, and sometimes those who want to see Turkey and Iran face off against each other.
I assess that Turkey is getting bogged down further in this war. As a result, bringing peace could take years.
We need very wise people and people who will demonstrate state wisdom."
