Yeni Akit now targets female athletes
Yeni Akit columnist Ahmet Gülümseyen has criticized female athletes participating in the Islamic Solidarity Games held in Riyadh due to their attire and participation in the competitions, labeling the organization a "betrayal of Islam."
The 6th Islamic Solidarity Games, held in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, concluded on November 21.
On the final day, Turkey won 1 gold and 4 bronze medals in para-powerlifting, wrestling, and handball. With a total of 155 medals—72 gold, 44 silver, and 39 bronze—Turkey finished at the top of the games for the second consecutive time.
The Women's National Handball Team reached its second consecutive championship after Konya 2021 by defeating Kazakhstan 34-31 in the Islamic Solidarity Games final. In para-powerlifting, Besra Duman won a bronze medal in the women's lightweight category with a 120kg lift, while Abdullah Kayapınar won a bronze medal in the men's lightweight category with a 178kg lift. Osman Göçen, representing Turkey in the men's 86kg freestyle wrestling, and Hakan Büyükçıngıl in the 125kg category, also became bronze medalists.
YENİ AKİT COLUMNIST TARGETS FEMALE ATHLETES
While the female athletes on the national team made a name for themselves with their achievements, Yeni Akit newspaper columnist Ahmet Gülümseyen targeted the female athletes.
Gülümseyen described the organization as the "pinnacle of 'disgrace'" due to the clothing worn by the female athletes, the fact that they work with male coaches, and that the competitions are watched by both men and women and are open to everyone.
The relevant part of Gülümseyen's article, in which he targets the female athletes, is as follows:
“Participation in the games with a total of 212 athletes, 110 women and 102 men, in 20 sports branches, and Turkey finishing at the top with a total of 155 medals, 72 of which are gold. In other words, it is appropriate to say, 'we finished the organization at the pinnacle of 'disgrace'.
How can we not have such an approach? From the clothing worn by the athletes in sports branches, to female athletes having male coaches, to the fact that the competitions are open to everyone to watch regardless of gender, and furthermore, this scene being broadcast live on social media and television channels, it summarizes the reason for the existence of a sports organization that shows the 'audacity' to include the word 'Islam' in its name so clearly.
When we try to summarize it in words, there is no other definition for the 'Islamic Solidarity Games' in terms of its rules and way of being held than the definition of it being the 'greatest betrayal of Islam'...
When we look at the list of athletes Turkey participated with, including the wrestlers whose president is Akgül, we see that there are six female athletes and two male coaches training them in the squad.
The fact that women represent Turkey on the wrestling mat in revealing clothing, and similarly, women dressed in low-cut outfits competing in other sports branches such as swimming and athletics, shows so clearly that the games, which include the word 'Islam' in their name, are held to destroy religious values. When this is the case, there is actually no need for 'many' words.
The fact that it took place in our city of Konya, known as the city of Mevlana, in the previous year of 2022, and today in Riyadh, the capital of the country where places considered sacred by Muslims are located, and the necessity of changing its name from Islamic Solidarity Games to 'games of distancing from Islam', actually leaves no need for many words.”
