Yılmaz Tunç clarifies: Will street interviews be banned?

Minister of Justice Yılmaz Tunç made important statements regarding street interviews and social media posts. Stating that there is no ban on street interviews, Minister Tunç said, "There are criminal sanctions for inciting the public to hatred and hostility."

While touching upon the importance of speaking on social media or in street interviews in terms of freedom of expression, Tunç emphasized that these conversations should not violate the rights and freedoms of others. He stated, "If these conversations are in a way that violates the rights and freedoms of others, sanctions are applied under the penal codes."

THE CLOSURE OF INSTAGRAM AND ROBLOX

Minister Tunç, regarding the closure of Instagram, said, "There was a reason for this closure. Negotiations were held regarding catalog crimes, this issue was resolved, and Instagram was reopened. Our children are very important. There were also complaints from some politicians regarding the closure of Roblox. Should we consider the safety of our children here, or the interests of companies? The state takes the necessary measures in this regard. Measures also need to be taken to prevent the commission of crimes on social media."

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A BAN

Reiterating that there is no ban on street interviews, Tunç said, "There is no such thing as a ban on street interviews. Just as insulting through the press is a crime, face-to-face insults are also a crime. We have expanded the scope of freedom of expression with legal changes made in recent years. We have implemented regulations where criticisms will not be considered crimes. However, this freedom also has a limit. If you speak in a way that incites the public to hatred and hostility, the judiciary steps in. It is the judicial authorities that will evaluate whether this situation is a crime or not."
