Zeynep Altıok reacts to the protest in front of LeMan: 'We recognize this from July 2, 1993'
Politician Zeynep Altıok Akatlı, daughter of poet Metin Altıok who was killed in the Madımak Massacre, commented on the footage of protesters raiding the Istanbul office of LeMan magazine, stating, "The attack on LeMan magazine evokes the medieval darkness of those who caused the greatest pain in our country's recent history. We recognize these slogans, this aggression, these threats, and this lack of intervention from July 2, 1993."
An investigation has been launched against LeMan magazine for "publicly insulting religious values" regarding a cartoon that sparked interpretations depicting Prophet Muhammad greeting people in the skies over a bombed city. Following calls for protest, some groups raided the magazine's office in Beyoğlu, and numerous LeMan cartoonists were targeted on social media.
In a post on her social media account, Zeynep Altıok compared the protest footage at LeMan to the events of the Madımak Massacre.
Zeynep Altıok Akatlı's post is as follows:
"Those who have failed to find justice in the 32 years that have passed, who release and reward the murderers of the massacre, are always on the side of this terrible mob that sees it as its right to kill anyone it misunderstands, dislikes, or disagrees with, fueled by the culture of hatred they constantly encourage.
LeMan magazine has made the necessary statement. There is no one to hear, no one to listen!
Even if there is discrimination, insult, or abuse, does the authority to decide this and the will to punish belong to the crazed members of this lynch culture?!
Why is the intervention applied to even passersby during women's protests, pride marches, rights seeking, and demands for justice on Istiklal Street not used to disperse this mob?
Two days later is July 2!!!
The footage is blood-curdling.
We know what comes next, we are still living it.
You cannot escape the responsibility. They are saying 'That building will burn'! How can you not disperse them, how can you not hold them accountable for these threats?!"
