3.7 times the minimum wage... Hunger and poverty thresholds announced

The R&D unit of Birleşik Kamu-İş, KAMU-AR, has announced the August 2024 results of its hunger and poverty threshold research, which calculates the expenditures a four-person family must make to consume a balanced and healthy diet, as well as to meet their other needs without feeling deprived. The report stated, "In August, when the hunger threshold increased by 182 lira from the previous month to reach the 21,000 lira mark, the poverty threshold also rose by 1,855 lira to 64,157 lira."

NON-FOOD EXPENDITURES 18 THOUSAND 627 LIRA

Key data from the report are as follows:

"In August, when the hunger threshold increased by 182 lira from the previous month, the expenditure required for non-food needs rose by 1,673 lira to 43,199 lira. The poverty threshold, which consists of the sum of both, increased by 1,855 lira compared to the previous month. Over the last one-year period, the hunger threshold showed an increase of 7,257 lira, the expenditure required for non-food needs increased by 18,627 lira, and the poverty threshold increased by 25,884 lira.

POVERTY THRESHOLD INCREASED BY 25 THOUSAND LIRA IN ONE YEAR

The hunger threshold, which rose to 20,958 lira in August, exceeded the minimum wage, which will be applied as 17,002 lira until the end of this year, by 3,956 lira. The minimum wage can only cover 26.5 percent of the 64,157 lira poverty threshold. The lowest pension, which the government was reluctant to increase and eventually raised to 12,500 lira, can only cover 59.6 percent of the hunger threshold.

The poverty threshold, which shows the total amount of food and non-food expenditures a four-person family must make to live in a way worthy of human dignity without feeling deprived, climbed by another 1,855 lira in August to 64,157 lira. The increase in the poverty threshold in the first eight months of the year was 17,320 lira. The increase in the poverty threshold over the last one-year period was 25,884 lira."
