The seasonal abundance of anchovies and bonito has been reflected in lower prices at fish stalls. In Eskişehir, fishmongers stated that the high catch volume of both species during the same period creates a significant opportunity for consumers.
At the stalls, bonito is being sold for 150 liras apiece, while anchovies are priced at 250 liras per kilogram. Fishmongers note that recent storms have pushed bonito prices up, but they expect prices to soften again once weather conditions return to normal.
It is stated that the price of bonito could drop to the 100-125 lira range in the coming period. According to the fishmongers, the approximately 500-gram bonito previously sold for 100 liras has been replaced this season by larger fish weighing 750-850 grams.
THE ABUNDANCE MAY LAST ANOTHER 40-45 DAYS
Fishmongers believe that the simultaneous abundance of anchovies and bonito could continue for another 40-45 days. Stating that one bonito can be sufficient for a meal for three people, the merchants emphasize that fish has become an economical option at current prices.
Storage advice was also provided for those who want to buy fish during this period of affordable prices. It is recommended that fish be wrapped in cling film or aluminum foil to ensure they are airtight before being placed in the freezer.
As for cooking suggestions, it is noted that bonito can be prepared in the oven with potatoes, onions, garlic, and spices, and that for fish to be pan-fried, the oil should be heated thoroughly.
