Affects 34 million vehicle owners: New prices for mandatory traffic insurance have come into effect

Affects 34 million vehicle owners: New prices for mandatory traffic insurance have come into effect

The Insurance Information and Monitoring Center (SBM) has announced the maximum premiums for mandatory traffic insurance to be applied in the July 2026 period. With the new tariff, premiums have been increased by 4 percent, and the new prices, which concern approximately 34 million vehicle owners, have come into effect.

NEW PREMIUM AMOUNTS IN ISTANBUL, ANKARA, AND IZMIR

According to the updated tariff, the mandatory traffic insurance premium for an automobile owner in the fourth step in Istanbul has been set at 18 thousand 789 liras.

For internal combustion automobiles in the zero step, which constitute the highest risk group in Istanbul, the premium has risen to 56 thousand 367 liras, while drivers in the eighth step, the lowest risk group, will pay a premium of 9 thousand 395 liras.

In Ankara, the maximum premium determined for the zero step is 54 thousand 772 liras, and 9 thousand 129 liras for the eighth step. In Izmir, the premium for drivers in the zero step was announced as 53 thousand 177 liras, and 8 thousand 863 liras for those in the eighth step.

PREMIUMS ARE HIGHER FOR COMMERCIAL VEHICLES

Premiums to be applied to commercial vehicles have also been updated in the new tariff. In Istanbul, the zero-step premium for commercial taxis has been set at 160 thousand 593 liras, and the eighth-step premium at 26 thousand 766 liras.

According to information reported by NTV, the maximum premium to be applied in Istanbul for buses with a seating capacity of 31 or more has risen to 394 thousand 539 liras, and the lowest premium to 65 thousand 757 liras.

SANCTIONS CONTINUE FOR THOSE DRIVING UNINSURED VEHICLES

Drivers who take to the road without mandatory traffic insurance will be subject to an administrative fine of 1,246 liras for the year 2026 during police inspections. In addition, the vehicle may be banned from traffic until insurance is obtained.

In the event that an uninsured vehicle is involved in an accident, the driver will pay an administrative fine of 2 thousand 39 liras and will also cover the damages caused to the other party themselves.

ADDITIONAL PREMIUM TO BE APPLIED IN CASE OF DELAY

Vehicle owners who do not renew their mandatory traffic insurance within the specified time will be charged a 5 percent surcharge on the policy premium for every 30 days of delay. The delay surcharge to be applied can reach up to 50 percent in total.
