AI competition accelerates: Amazon's new project Olympus

According to a report by Reuters citing sources familiar with the matter, the model, codenamed "Olympus," has 2 trillion parameters, making it one of the largest AI models currently being trained. The team working on the Olympus model is led by Rohit Prasad, the former head of Alexa who now reports directly to CEO Andy Jassy.

For comparison, the GPT-4 model from Microsoft (MSFT)-backed OpenAI, one of the best models currently available in this field, has one trillion parameters.

Amazon has already trained smaller models such as Titan. The company has also partnered with AI model startups like Anthropic and AI21 Labs, offering them to Amazon Web Services (AWS) users.

Sources stated that Amazon believes having its own proprietary models could make its offerings more attractive on AWS, where enterprise customers want access to the best-performing models, and that there is no specific timeline for the release of the new model.
