Turkey has been in a deep economic vortex for a long time. Moreover, this vortex is not the result of a sudden disaster or a war; on the contrary, it looks like the work of a regular, controlled, and almost programmed process of impoverishment. I am underlining the word “systematic” because there is a pattern here that is too consistent to be explained by coincidence.

So why?

Why would a country deliberately condemn its own people to poverty?

Although it may seem contradictory, the answer is simple: The fundamental logic of politics is to remain in power, and social impoverishment is a surprisingly functional tool for certain management approaches.

An Eight-Year Endless Crisis: Coincidence or Choice?

Think about it…

The people of this country last breathed a sigh of relief in 2017. We have been in a period of uninterrupted crisis since 2018. There is talk of a three-year “anti-inflation program.” However, there is no such thing as an anti-inflation program that lasts for three years in the world; in that time, the program would end, governments would change, and the pain would be erased from memory.

But that is not what happened here.

As if someone never wanted this crisis to end…

As if someone preferred not for the economy to stand up, but on the contrary, for its collapse to continue…

Why?

Because an impoverished society is unresponsive.

No Disaster, No War… So Why This Collapse?

Turkey has neither experienced a major disaster nor been dragged into a war in the last eight years.

The country has not been isolated from the world like North Korea.

It did not fall into the center of an energy crisis.

No embargo was applied to shut down its foreign trade.

Then why did the public regress to the lowest level of prosperity in history?

Why can millions of people not pay their rent, why do children go to school hungry, and why has almost the entire society been condemned to “survival” mode?

There is only one reasonable answer to this question:

Systematic impoverishment.

The Political Function of Impoverishment

A hungry person cannot think.

Masses struggling with the cost of living cannot react to issues concerning the country's fate.

A public constantly struggling for survival is doomed to remain indifferent to political developments.

This is exactly what is happening today.

Society has been rendered unable to meet its most basic physiological needs. Rent and food have taken over people's lives. As a result, reflexes against the extraordinary events on the country's agenda have dulled.

A Country with a Short Social Memory

Research suggests that the average social memory is 60 days. Let's say we don't remember the last 8 years.

Indeed, consider what has happened in the last few weeks:

The visit of the Catholic Pope, which challenged sovereignty borders drawn with sensitivity for centuries, the church activities carried out within Turkey, those images where it was unclear whether the soldier was saluting or reporting…

NO SOUND.

The statements of a person who, despite holding the title of ambassador, thinks of themselves as a “mandate governor” and ignores national sovereignty…

NO SOUND.

A former administrator of a foreign autonomous region walking around Turkey with long-barreled armed guards; the scandalous images given with a police special operations officer and an Akrep armored vehicle behind them…

NO SOUND.

The İmralı discussions…

NO SOUND.

The reason for this silence is crystal clear: The rumbling of the stomach is louder than the shouting.

The only sound people hear now is the sound of their hungry children.

Not Enough: The Final Weapon is Activated

It used to be said:

“The nation is being lulled to sleep with football, tabloid news, and daily debates.”

Yes, these still exist and are working at full speed. The country doesn't even remember its agenda from a week ago.

But even this was not enough.

The society must not have become completely unresponsive yet, so systematic impoverishment was put into play as the final weapon.

Today, people cannot think, cannot question, cannot follow.

Because they are trying to survive.

Result: A Country Where Poverty is a Design, Not a Coincidence

Turkey's last eight years are an economically inexplicable equation.

Rational economic literature cannot explain such long-term and artificial crises.

However, political science can:

Poverty is one of the most effective tools for passivizing the will of society.

And Turkey has been the target of this tool for exactly eight years.

I know it is hard to remember, but look at the political changes we have experienced in the last 8 years. Think about the state the country has reached.

Systematic impoverishment continues at full speed.

This means that the political plans are not over yet. It means that internal and external actors still have work to do.

It seems there is much more to be done.
