Arab League Assistant Secretary-General Hossam Zaki made statements to Egypt's Al-Qahera News television following his visit to Beirut.
Pointing to the Arab League's previous decisions that "defined Hezbollah as a terrorist organization," Zaki recalled that communication with Hezbollah had been severed based on those resolutions.
"MEMBER STATES HAVE AGREED"
Stating that "member states of the Arab League have agreed not to label Hezbollah as a terrorist organization," Zaki noted that the new decision paves the way for the Arab League to establish communication with Hezbollah.
Zaki noted that "the Arab League no longer classifies Hezbollah as a terrorist organization."
Following a decision taken by the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) on March 2, the Arab League had also classified Hezbollah as a "terrorist organization" on March 11, 2016, and declared that it was "spreading extremism and sectarianism."
According to reports in the Lebanese press yesterday, Arab League Assistant Secretary-General Zaki met with Member of Parliament Mohammad Raad, the leader of the "Loyalty to the Resistance" bloc affiliated with Hezbollah, during his visit to Beirut. The meeting was recorded as the first contact between the Arab League and Hezbollah in over 10 years.
