Asylum seekers to be allowed to work without permits in Turkey

While unemployment figures in Turkey remain at significant levels, according to the amendment made to the "Regulation on the Implementation of the International Labor Force Law" published in today's issue of the Official Gazette, asylum seekers within the scope will be exempt from work permits for the periods and within the scope determined by the notification of the Ministry of Interior.

According to the regulation, within the periods determined by the Ministry of Interior, asylum seekers will be able to work for 6 months without obtaining a work permit. This regulation also covers foreigners under humanitarian residence permits and temporary protection.

Furthermore, foreigners who have come to Turkey with the intention of transiting to another country will also be able to benefit from this exemption.

ALSO COVERS MEMBERS OF THE PRESS AND ATHLETES

In accordance with the amendment made to the relevant article of the regulation, foreign press members arriving under permanent press cards will also be exempt from work permits for the duration of their duties, provided that they have the favorable opinion of the Presidency's Directorate of Communications.

In this context, the exemption period from work permits for foreigners reported by relevant public institutions and organizations as being able to provide significant services and contributions to Turkey in economic, socio-cultural, technological, and educational fields has been increased from 6 months to 3 years.

Regulations have also been introduced for professional foreign athletes, coaches, and sports personnel. In this context, the requirement to obtain a 'sports-endorsed visa' has been abolished. These individuals will be able to work in Turkey without a work permit for the duration of their contracts with federations or clubs.

PERIOD EXTENDED

With another amendment made to the regulation, the time limit of 30 days from the date of entry into Turkey, which was applied for work permit exemption applications made by foreigners from within the country, has been abolished. Accordingly, applications for work permit exemptions from within the country can be made during the periods the foreigner is legally present in Turkey.
