It was widely said that Hafize Gaye Erkan, who was appointed to the position after the May elections, had been recommended by Minister of Treasury and Finance Mehmet Şimşek.

According to a report in Gazete Duvar; it is claimed in political circles that the person who recommended Erkan to AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was Baykar Technology General Manager Haluk Bayraktar.

The report notes that those making the claim did not provide further details, while drawing attention to common points in the career paths of the two individuals.

According to the report; Erkan is a graduate of Istanbul High School, while Bayraktar is a graduate of Kabataş High School. Bayraktar studied in Ankara and Erkan in Istanbul, but both individuals received education in Industrial Engineering.

During the same years, Bayraktar was pursuing a doctorate at Columbia University, while Erkan was doing so at Princeton University.

Following Erkan's appointment as Central Bank Governor, Bayraktar had shared the following post: "I wish success in her new role to Ms. Hafize Gaye Erkan, who has a highly successful educational and professional background and is the first female governor appointed to the Central Bank Presidency by our President."
