Best-selling domestic and imported cars in Turkey revealed

In the Turkish automobile and light commercial vehicle market, imported vehicles accounted for 61.79 percent of sales in the first 5 months of this year, while vehicles produced in Turkey held a 38.20 percent share.

Best-selling domestic and imported cars in Turkey revealed

According to data from the Automotive Distributors and Mobility Association (ODMD), sales of automobiles and light commercial vehicles increased by 6 percent in the first five months of the year. As of the end of May, a total of 471 thousand 743 new vehicles were sold.

Automobile sales increased by 10.25 percent to 375 thousand 97 during this period, while light commercial vehicle sales were recorded at 96 thousand 646, a decrease of 7.9 percent.

DOMESTIC-IMPORTED SALES FIGURES

In the market of 471 thousand 743 units during the January-May period of this year, sales of domestically produced vehicles reached 146 thousand 727. Sales of imported vehicles were determined to be 325 thousand 16.

During this period, the share of domestically produced vehicles in total sales was 31.11 percent, while the share of imported vehicles was 68.89 percent.

DOMESTIC-IMPORTED DISTRIBUTION OVER THE LAST 5 YEARS

Looking at the last 5 years, the share of imported vehicles in sales has been higher than the share of vehicles produced in Turkey.

According to ODMD data, at the end of last year, the share of domestically produced vehicles in total sales was measured at 35.20 percent, and the share of imported vehicles was at 64.79 percent.

The domestic ratio in sales was 43.89 percent in 2021, but fell to 43.81 percent by the end of 2022.

In 2020, the share of domestically produced vehicles in total sales was 45.72 percent, while the share of imports was 54.27 percent. In 2019, the share of domestic production was recorded at 43.01 percent and the share of imports at 56.98 percent.

LEADING BRANDS IN DOMESTIC SALES

Fiat led the domestic sales ranking by volume, with 50 thousand 501 of its 58 thousand 212 total sales in the automobile and light commercial vehicle market during the January-May period consisting of vehicles produced in Turkey.

Fiat was followed by Renault, with 38 thousand 285 domestic production units out of 53 thousand 708 total sales, and Toyota, with 16 thousand 118 domestic production units out of 23 thousand 651 total sales.

Hyundai ranked fourth with 15 thousand 247 domestic sales out of a total of 24 thousand 380, and Ford ranked fifth with 14 thousand 727 units out of 37 thousand 313 total sales.

Togg's total sales figure was reported as 11 thousand 288.

BRAND RANKING IN IMPORTED SALES

German automotive manufacturer Volkswagen took the top spot on the imported sales list in the Turkish automotive market with 35 thousand 168 units sold in five months.

Following Volkswagen were Chery with 26 thousand 990 sales, Peugeot with 26 thousand 193 sales, Citroen with 24 thousand 28 sales, and Ford with 22 thousand 586 sales.
