Bond deluge in advanced economies
Advanced economies are preparing for a record level of bond sales to finance their 2024 budget deficits. According to Bloomberg Intelligence estimates, the US, UK, Eurozone, and Japan will sell a net 2.1 trillion dollars in new bonds this year. This represents a 7 percent increase compared to last year.
The US, UK, and Eurozone governments are preparing to issue bonds to markets at a rare pace over the next few weeks.
According to Bloomberg Intelligence estimates, these countries, which once struggled with significant deficits, along with Japan, will sell a net 2.1 trillion dollars in new bonds to finance their 2024 spending plans, a 7 percent increase compared to last year.
Recently, concerns regarding rising budget deficits in advanced economies appear to have eased. This situation has been influenced by the slowing of inflation and investors focusing on interest rate cuts. However, many bond market analysts point out that given the current supply and demand dynamics, concerns about budget deficits could return to the agenda.
Padhraic Garvey, Head of Global Debt and Rates Strategy at ING Financial Markets, stated, "The market is currently focused on the Fed's rate cycle. Once the novelty of this issue wears off, we will start to worry more about the budget deficit."
According to data from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), with the increase in government borrowing needs following the pandemic, the public debt-to-GDP ratio in advanced economies has risen from 75 percent 20 years ago to over 112 percent.
