Citizens condemned to live in debt: 21 new enforcement files every minute

CHP Niğde Deputy Ömer Fethi Gürer stated that as of the week of February 13, 2026, the total credit and credit card debt of citizens to banks reached 5 trillion 948 billion 456 million TL. When 265 billion TL in non-performing credit and credit card debt and 101 billion TL in debt transferred to asset management companies are added to this amount, the total debt amount rose to 6 trillion 315 billion 308 million TL.

Reminding that the total debt was 6 trillion 72 billion 490 million TL in the week of January 2, 2026, Gürer noted that the debt amount increased by 242 billion 818 million TL in one and a half months. Stating that this increase is an indicator that the debt spiral is not slowing down, Gürer described this picture in the first weeks of 2026 as "alarming."

INTEREST PAYMENTS ARE RISING

Ömer Fethi Gürer also shared the interest amounts that citizens were forced to pay at the end of 2025. Stating that the interest amount paid for individual loans at the end of 2025 was 719 billion 879 million TL and the interest paid for credit cards was 502 billion 343 million TL, Gürer said that the total interest payment reached 1 trillion 222 billion 222 million TL.

FRIGHTENING INCREASE IN ENFORCEMENT FILES

Gürer announced that as of February 21, 2026, the number of new files arriving at enforcement offices was 1 million 539 thousand 602. He reported that the total number of pending files, meaning those in process, rose to 24 million 295 thousand 54. Stating that this figure was 22 million 557 thousand 957 on February 21, 2025, Gürer expressed that there was a 7.7 percent increase in enforcement files with the addition of approximately 1 million 737 thousand new files in one year.

Gürer emphasized the severity of this increase by saying, "In other words, 21 new enforcement files were opened per minute, and 1.5 million people faced enforcement proceedings in the first 50 days of 2026."

CITIZENS CONDEMNED TO LIVE IN DEBT

Gürer stated that with 6.3 trillion TL in debt, 1.2 trillion TL in interest payments, 4.2 million people falling into follow-up, and over 24 million enforcement files, citizens are facing a massive debt burden. Expressing that this debt landscape will not change without ensuring income growth and strengthening production, Gürer said, "We will change this order, we will establish a fair order."
