Citizens' debt is rising!

Driven by the current economic climate, household debt to banks continues to rise. In the last week alone, the total debt amount increased by 48 billion liras, reaching 4 trillion 231 billion liras.

In a statement, CHP Niğde Deputy Ömer Fethi Gürer noted that economic indicators are steadily worsening, stating that the detention of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu has further increased economic uncertainty.

Gürer stated that fluctuations in foreign exchange and gold prices have increased production costs, which directly reflects on store shelves and dining tables, deepening public poverty. He added that citizens' consumer loan debt has risen to 2 trillion 230 billion liras, while credit card debt has reached 1 trillion 981 billion liras.

As of the beginning of 2025, the number of citizens unable to pay their debts has risen to 238,000. The number of new files arriving at enforcement offices this year has climbed to 2,401,514, marking an increase of 72,240 files compared to the same period last year.

Gürer remarked, "Citizens are now paying off debt with more debt. Enforcement offices are packed with files. The economic crisis is now being felt in every household."
