Citizens in a debt spiral! Number of people under enforcement proceedings exceeds 2.3 million with an 18 percent increase

High inflation and the economic crisis continue to break the backs of citizens.

According to a report in BirGün; CHP Manisa Deputy and member of the TBMM Planning and Budget Committee Ahmet Vehbi Bakırlıoğlu stated that debts have multiplied with the arrival of the month of Ramadan.

Bakırlıoğlu said, “Due to unpaid loans and credit card debts, 3 million 843 thousand people are in debt to both banks and asset management companies.”

Bakırlıoğlu, stating that an increase of 8.1 billion liras has been observed in non-performing consumer loans since the beginning of the year, shared the following data:

ASSET MANAGEMENT COMPANIES

The increase rate is 18 percent. Currently, 2 million 323 thousand people are under enforcement proceedings by banks.

In January, a total of 194 thousand 142 people were placed under enforcement proceedings by banks due to both credit card and individual loan debts. In January of last year, this number was 143 thousand 863 people. The number of people placed under proceedings increased by 50 thousand 279 compared to the same month last year. The increase rate is 35 percent.

Apart from this, there are debts to asset management companies. These are debts that no longer have any possibility of being paid. Because banks cannot collect them, they sell their receivables to these companies in bulk at very low prices.

According to the report prepared by the Central Bank; there are 41 billion liras in non-performing consumer loan receivables under the control of asset management companies. Therefore, 2 million 118 thousand people have nearly 86 billion liras in defaulted loan debt, excluding interest and enforcement costs.
