It has been claimed that the US administration under President Donald Trump is considering a 90-day ban on diesel exports due to rising fuel prices in the country.
According to a report by Politico, which cites five sources familiar with the matter, the White House is preparing to take a tougher step to limit the impact of energy prices on voters ahead of the midterm elections to be held on November 3.
It was reported that the plan includes a temporary halt to diesel exports; however, there are objections to this proposal within the administration, the oil industry, and among some Republican members of Congress.
Those opposing the measure are said to have warned that such a decision, while potentially lowering prices in the short term, could lead to higher prices in the future. The report states that some sources said Trump is considering announcing the ban by the weekend and is treating potential negative consequences as a matter for a later agenda.
If this step is taken, it would be the first restriction placed on US energy exports since the lifting of the long-standing oil export ban in 2015 during the administration of former President Barack Obama.
It was reported that the price of a gallon of diesel in the US has risen by 2.83 dollars since last year, reaching the 6.50 dollar level. The increase in diesel prices is creating pressure in different areas of the economy, particularly through transportation and production costs.
