Consumer confidence in the US fell below expectations in April

The University of Michigan released the preliminary data for the consumer confidence index for April, which is prepared based on the trends of American consumers.

Accordingly, consumer confidence fell by 1.5 points in April compared to the previous month, dropping to 77.9.

The consumer confidence index, which came in below market expectations, was projected to reach a value of 79 during this period. The consumer confidence index had stood at 79.4 in March.

The current economic conditions index, which measures Americans' assessment of current financial conditions, decreased by 3.2 points on a monthly basis in April to 79.3.

The consumer expectations index, which reflects consumers' long-term projections, also fell by 0.4 points to 77 in the same period.

Consumers' short-term inflation expectations rose by 0.2 points on a monthly basis in April to 3.1 percent. Long-term inflation expectations also increased from 2.8 percent to 3 percent.

In the statement, Joanne Hsu, Director of Consumer Surveys, noted that consumers have perceived very little change in the state of the economy since the beginning of the new year, and that expectations regarding personal finances, business conditions, and labor markets have all remained stable over the last 4 months.

However, stating that the slight increase in inflation expectations in April reflects some frustration that the slowdown in inflation may have stalled, Hsu said, "Overall, consumers are reserving judgment on the economy in light of the upcoming elections, as in the view of many consumers, the elections could have a significant impact on the trajectory of the economy."
