Contactless payment limit without PIN increased: Change takes effect tomorrow

Within the scope of the latest regulation by the Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency (BDDK), the upper limit for contactless transactions without a PIN made with credit cards and mobile devices has been raised from 1,500 TL to 2,500 TL. The new limit will be effective as of January 15, 2026.

With this change, consumers will be able to make payments of up to 2,500 TL without entering a PIN for purchases made via both physical cards and contactless mobile devices. This limit, which was previously increased to 1,500 TL on July 1, 2024, has been updated again after an interval of approximately one and a half years.

In the notification letter sent by the BDDK to banks, it was stated that "as of January 15, the contactless payment limit without a PIN will be applied as 2,500 TL."

Contactless payment limits without a PIN vary in different regions of the world. Looking at European countries, this amount is applied as 100 pounds in the United Kingdom. In France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Greece, the contactless transaction limit without a PIN is set at 50 euros. In the United States, there is no standard upper limit, and each bank can choose its own practice.

With the new regulation, the contactless payment experience is expected to increase further in terms of speed and convenience, especially for daily shopping.
