CHP Ankara Deputy Deniz Demir stated in his study that the cost of minting coins has risen due to the increase in the price of the metals used. Demir noted that the cost of a 25-kuruş coin is 1.64 TL, a 50-kuruş coin is 2.31 TL, and a 1 TL coin is 2.77 TL.
CHP Ankara Deputy Deniz Demir announced to the Central Bank that the cost of a 25-kuruş coin has risen to 1.64 TL due to the increase in the price of the metals used in minting coins. Demir stated that, similarly, the cost of a 50-kuruş coin is 2.31 TL and the cost of a 1 Turkish Lira coin is 2.77 TL.
Demir stated that the General Directorate of Mint and Stamp Printing House has reduced the weight of the coins to lower costs, noting that the ratios of copper, zinc, and nickel used have changed, which has provided a 30 percent saving. However, he noted that the rise in foreign exchange rates has also been reflected in the alloys used in metal coins.
Expressing that as a result of the increase in costs, coins have lost their value in the market, Demir stated that this situation provides an opportunity for opportunists to gain unfair profit. Pointing out that the cost of a 1 Turkish Lira coin is approaching 3 TL, Demir emphasized that in an environment where bread costs 10 lira, coins such as 50 kuruş and 1 TL have completely lost their value.
