Countdown in fuel: Deadline for the sliding scale system has been set

The rise in oil prices, driven by tensions in the Middle East and concerns regarding the Strait of Hormuz, has been reflected in fuel prices as hikes. While gasoline saw an increase of 2 lira and 69 kuruş and diesel saw an increase of 3 lira and 12 kuruş this week, a portion of the rise was covered by an ÖTV reduction under the sliding scale system.

GRADUAL TRANSITION TO BEGIN IN SLIDING SCALE SYSTEM

According to the decision published in the Official Gazette, 50 percent of the increases in domestic refinery prices will continue to be covered by an ÖTV reduction until July 31.

This rate will be reduced to 25 percent for the period between August 1 and September 30. The sliding scale system will end completely as of October 1, 2026.

The decision also states that if there is a decrease in refinery prices, the ÖTV will be increased by the amount of the reduction. Accordingly, any drop in prices will first be reflected in the tax adjustment.

A PORTION OF THIS WEEK'S HIKES COVERED BY ÖTV

This week, a total of 2 lira and 69 kuruş was added to the price of gasoline, and 3 lira and 12 kuruş to diesel. Approximately half of the cost increase was balanced by the ÖTV reduction applied under the sliding scale system.

According to calculations, for those using diesel in a 50-liter tank, an amount of approximately 156 lira, and for those using gasoline, an amount of approximately 135 lira was not reflected in pump prices.

According to calculations reported by Türkiye Gazetesi, considering daily gasoline and diesel consumption, the daily equivalent of the ÖTV reduction was calculated to be approximately 240 million lira.
