'Denizbank' claim in Russian press

The Moscow-based business magazine RBC, published monthly in Russia, has published a claim regarding Denizbank, citing sources who assist Russians in opening bank accounts in Turkey.

RBC alleged that the conditions for Russian citizens to open bank accounts have tightened significantly and that applications are increasingly being rejected.

CLAIM THAT NO CONCESSIONS ARE MADE

Sergey Ovsyannikov, one of the intermediaries mentioned in RBC's report, stated, "Since the beginning of 2024, DenizBank has effectively stopped opening accounts for Russian citizens. Only one out of every ten applications to open an account is approved."

Stating that even holding a residence permit or a passport in Turkey does not provide any ease in opening a bank account, Ovsyannikov said that the bank only approves applications from customers with deposits of 100,000 dollars or more.

"US PRESSURE"

Ria Novosti, one of Russia's leading newspapers, reported that as of February, it was learned that Denizbank had begun requesting verified residence documents from its Russian customers.

A source speaking to Ria Novosti regarding the situation stated, "The problem stems partly from the pressure the US is exerting on Turkey regarding sanctions."

Reporting that "Turkish exporters have faced banks refusing to accept money transfers from Russia," Ria Novosti noted that Turkey and Russia are in dialogue to find a solution to the problems.
