Egg prices hit by another price hike

In Afyon and Kayseri, which are among Turkey's major egg production centers, wholesale egg prices have increased by 35 kuruş.

Last week, the price of a double-yolk egg, which was sold for 2.75 TL in Afyon Başmakçı, rose to 3.10 TL. The price of a pullet egg also increased from 1.55 TL to 1.90 TL.

In Kayseri, the price of a double-yolk egg, which was 2.66 TL, rose to 3.01 TL, while the price of a pullet egg increased from 1.70 TL to 2.05 TL.

"PRODUCERS WHO WERE NOT MAKING A PROFIT SENT CHICKENS TO SLAUGHTER"

Speaking to Ekonomim, Kaytaş AŞ General Manager Ahmet Behiç Salt stated that the price increase in eggs stems from a supply-demand imbalance. Noting that egg prices had been on a downward trend for the last 2 months and that producers were selling below their costs, Salt said, "Producers who were not making a profit sent their chickens that had completed their laying cycle (spent hens) to slaughter. This created a supply shortage in the market. It will take 6 months for this to recover. Current supply cannot meet demand. This has been reflected in prices," he said.

"1 EGG IS NOT EVEN WORTH 1 CIGARETTE"

Emphasizing that the price of 1 egg is currently below the price of a single cigarette, Salt noted that egg producers should be supported by taking input costs into account.

Stressing that export prices are also trending below the domestic market, Salt added that the foreign market is also demanding smaller-sized eggs in the pullet, young hen, and broiler categories.
