Erdoğan declared 2024 the Year of Retirees: Turkey hits rock bottom in the Global Pension Index! 'It will be worse in 2025'

AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan may have declared 2024 the Year of Retirees, but millions of retirees have been condemned to poverty-level wages.

Republican People's Party (CHP) Deputy Chairman Özgür Karabat shared data from the Global Pension Index by human resources consulting firm Mercer on his X account.

Criticizing the AKP government's economic policies, Karabat stated, "As a result of the AKP's economic policies that deepen poverty, retirees are living below the hunger threshold."

Pointing out that the situation of retirees is also reflected in global research, Karabat said, "Turkey has hit rock bottom in the global pension league."

Karabat said, "According to the Global Pension Index by human resources consulting firm Mercer, Turkey ranked 45th out of 48 countries. The Netherlands ranked first in the pension index, while India ranked last. In the Global Pension Index, where 48 pension systems covering 65 percent of the world's population were evaluated within the framework of more than 50 indicators, Turkey was surpassed not only by developed Western countries but also by countries such as Botswana, Peru, and Colombia. In the study where Turkey ranked 45th out of 48 countries, it was observed that Turkey lagged behind not only Western countries but also countries like Botswana, Peru, and Colombia."

''SOCIAL DECAY ACCOMPANIES THE CRISIS''

Stating that the picture will be even worse in 2025, Karabat expressed the following:

"Because the AKP's plan is not to base salary increases on actual inflation, but on targeted inflation as recommended by the IMF. You look at the AKP's 2025 budget, tax revenues are increasing by nearly 50 percent. But salary increases are being made according to imaginary, low inflation targets."

Saying "Social decay is accompanying the economic crisis," Karabat assessed, "At the point we have reached, we have gone from 'the West is jealous of us' to a Turkey that competes with India."
