Fish stalls bring smiles to citizens with both abundance and affordability
There is an abundance of anchovies at the Balıkesir Metropolitan Municipality Bandırma Fish Market. This abundance is also reflected in prices, with the price of a kilogram of anchovies dropping to 70 liras.
Fish stalls in Bandırma are bringing smiles to citizens with both their abundance and affordability. The abundance of anchovies, in particular, is being reflected in the prices. Anchovies are being sold for 70 liras per kilogram, or 100 liras for one and a half kilograms. Fishermen state that because there are fewer bonito in the sea this year, the anchovies were not preyed upon by the bonito, which has led to this abundance of anchovies.
Fisherman Metin Çokgezenler, in his statement providing information about fish prices, said, “The abundance of anchovies in the Bandırma Gulf has brought smiles to the citizens. As the weather has cooled, the variety of fish has increased. Sardines are being sold for 50 liras per kilogram, while horse mackerel and anchovies are 70 liras per kilogram. Whiting has also started to arrive. We are selling it for 150 liras per kilogram.”
Stating that there is an abundance of anchovies because there are no large fish in the sea this year, Çokgezenler added, “The scarcity of bonito and bluefish is causing the anchovies to multiply in the sea. In other words, the big fish could not eat the small fish. Thus, anchovies have become abundant in the Sea of Marmara.”
