Food inflation crisis in Turkey: 15 million people are undernourished
While food prices are falling globally, food inflation in Turkey has reached record levels at 58.9%. This increase is causing 15 million citizens to suffer from undernourishment and is deepening hunger issues among children.
Although the average annual food inflation worldwide is -0.2% and -1.86% in the European Union (EU) region, food prices in Turkey have increased by 58.9%.
INFLATION IN TURKEY IS HIGHER THAN EVEN IN PALESTINE
While food inflation is 33.3% in Palestine, which is under Israeli attack, it is 9.8% in Russia and only 3.3% in Libya, where internal conflicts continue. In the sub-Saharan region, food inflation was recorded at 5.6% in Kenya, where food access is limited, and 4% in landlocked Botswana.
In Turkey, bread prices rose by 5.21%, vegetables by 7%, and eggs by 8% in just one month. Food inflation also brings the problem of undernourishment with it.
According to data from the World Food Programme, 14.8 million people in Turkey are undernourished. According to data from Hacettepe University, the stunting rate in children under 5 is approximately 10%. Furthermore, 1.3 million children go to school hungry.
Due to the rise in food prices, citizens are struggling with hunger.
The post by Istanbul Planning Agency President Buğra Gökçe on the subject is as follows:
?? Turkey is the 4th country with the highest food inflation in the world. Approximately 15 million of our citizens are undernourished!
