July expectations for minimum wage: Will there be an increase?

Whether the minimum wage, which was increased by 30 percent at the beginning of the year to a net of 22,104 TL, will be re-evaluated in July is a matter of curiosity. Rising inflation and decreasing purchasing power are increasing expectations for a mid-year raise among employees. Statements from officials are being closely monitored during this process.

The minimum wage in Turkey is determined every year in December and comes into effect in January. At the beginning of 2024, the gross minimum wage was announced as 26,005 TL, and the net minimum wage as 22,104 TL. The minimum wage support provided to employers was also increased from 700 TL to 1,000 TL.

Minister of Labor and Social Security Vedat Işıkhan made assessments regarding the possibility of a mid-year raise in July. Işıkhan stated that they expect a decline in inflation but that one must be cautious against economic fluctuations.

He stated that in the event of an extraordinary situation, a new update could come to the agenda upon the President's instruction.

In the past, a mid-year raise was made to the minimum wage in July 2023, and the net wage was increased from 8,506 TL to 11,402 TL. A similar update also took place in July 2022.

According to the March data from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK), the CPI increased by 2.46 percent, and the D-PPI increased by 1.88 percent. On an annual basis, consumer inflation was recorded at 38.1 percent, and producer inflation at 23.5 percent.

Whether there will be a mid-year raise for the minimum wage in July is not yet clear. The government's anti-inflation policies and the steps to be taken by the economic management will be decisive in this regard. Millions of employees are eagerly awaiting the decision to be made in July.
