Getting a Turkish passport from abroad is cheaper than in Turkey

For Turkish citizens living abroad, obtaining a passport has become much more affordable compared to the costs in Turkey. According to a report by Birgün, this advantage, which began with the halving of passport fees abroad in 2016, has become even more pronounced with changes in exchange rates.

For example, while obtaining a passport valid for more than 3 years at Turkish diplomatic missions in the US costs 118 dollars (4,805 TL), 12,409 TL is paid for a passport of the same duration in Turkey.

Those who want to obtain a passport in Turkey can make an appointment through the Ministry of Interior's General Directorate of Population and Citizenship Affairs. A booklet fee of 1,135 TL is requested here, and the fee amounts vary depending on the duration of the passport. While a 6-month passport costs 3,494 TL and a 2-year passport costs 6,766 TL, the total cost for passports valid for more than 3 years reaches 12,409 TL.

COST ADVANTAGE AT DIPLOMATIC MISSIONS ABROAD

Abroad, especially in countries like the US and Canada, passport costs are quite low compared to Turkey. While a passport valid for more than 3 years in Canada costs 171 Canadian Dollars (5,058 TL), this cost is at the level of 113 euros (5,358 TL) in Europe. This situation provides significant savings when compared to prices in Turkey.

The regulation that came into effect in 2016, which halved passport fees for Turkish citizens living abroad, initially created a small difference. However, over the years, this gap has grown steadily with changes in exchange rates and fee increases in Turkey. The difference, which was approximately 62 euros in 2016, has reached 150 euros today. This situation makes obtaining a passport abroad more attractive.
