Former Central Bank Governor Rüşdü Saracoğlu has passed away as a result of a heart condition. Saracoğlu served as the governor of the Central Bank between 1987 and 1993.

WHO IS RÜŞDÜ SARACOĞLU?

Born in Ankara in 1948, Saracoğlu began his education at Ankara Atatürk High School and subsequently graduated from the METU Department of Economics and Statistics.

He crowned his academic career in economics by earning a doctorate at the University of Minnesota. He served as a lecturer at the University of Minnesota and Boston College.

After working as an economist at the IMF, Saracoğlu held significant positions in Turkey, including Governor of the Central Bank, Chairman of the Board of Macro Consulting, and Minister of State. He also participated in the political arena as a 20th-term Member of Parliament for İzmir.

Saracoğlu, whose family roots are also notable, was the grandson of former Prime Minister Mehmet Şükrü Saracoğlu and the son of Hüseyin Aydın Saracoğlu, former President of the 9th Criminal Chamber of the Court of Cassation. After serving as the Head of the Banking and Insurance Group at Koç Holding, he held the position of Chairman of the Board at Allianz Sigorta A.Ş. and Allianz Hayat ve Emeklilik A.Ş. He retired from his professional career in 2013.

Rüşdü Saracoğlu was married to Nurdan Saracoğlu and was the father of Aslı Saracoğlu.
