Güler Sabancı: We believe in the transformative role of cinema for the future of the world and social development
The 36th European Film Awards, held by the European Film Academy in Berlin, the capital of Germany, found their winners in 24 different categories. Güler Sabancı, Chair of the Sabancı Holding Board of Directors and Chair of the Sabancı Foundation Board of Trustees, was deemed worthy of the Sustainability Award by the European Film Academy.
Güler Sabancı, Chair of the Sabancı Holding Board of Directors and Chair of the Sabancı Foundation Board of Trustees, was honored with the Sustainability Award (Prix Film4Climate), which is presented to institutions and organizations that inspire and encourage a sense of responsibility by expanding the scope of sustainability in Europe beyond environmental sustainability. Sabancı, who draws attention to the climate emergency through cinema and carries out significant work in the field of sustainability with the Sabancı Foundation Short Film Competition, accepted the award on behalf of the Sabancı Foundation.
In her statement, Güler Sabancı, Chair of the Sabancı Holding Board of Directors and Chair of the Sabancı Foundation Board of Trustees, said, “I am happy to be the recipient of the Sustainability Award, which I believe represents our shared vision. I would like to thank the European Film Academy for this valuable award on behalf of our Foundation.
As a Foundation with a 50-year history working in the fields of social change, culture-arts, and education, we launched the Sabancı Foundation Short Film Competition 8 years ago with the slogan ‘Short Film, Long Impact’ to draw attention to social issues through cinema. We believe in the transformative role of cinema for the future of the world and social development.
Our world is going through a period of multiple crises brought about by the climate emergency, rising inequalities, and poverty. Cooperation between the public sector, the private sector, and non-governmental organizations is vital to overcome these crises.
Furthermore, man-made wars are increasing human tragedies every day. I long for peace and wish for the new year to bring peace to the world. I believe that in this way, we can focus on the issues of climate emergency, inequalities, and poverty, where we can contribute together to solutions for a sustainable world.”
