Heavy fines coming for both those who don't issue receipts and those who don't take them: A child sent to the corner store could return with a fine
It has been learned that both businesses and consumers could face serious fines due to increased penalty clauses in the tax package expected to be discussed in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) this week. It was stated that a 5,000 TL fine will be imposed on consumers who do not take their receipts.
Continuing its efforts to curb the informal economy, the Ministry of Treasury and Finance is preparing to increase tax penalties by amounts exceeding 43 times their current levels.
In this direction, a penalty is coming not only for business owners who do not issue receipts but also for consumers who do not take them.
10,000 LIRA FINE FOR THE FIRST OFFENSE AND 65,000 LIRA FOR SUBSEQUENT OFFENSES FOR BUSINESSES THAT DO NOT ISSUE RECEIPTS
According to the report by Erdoğan Süzer from Sözcü, officials from the Union of Chambers of Certified Public Accountants of Turkey (TÜRMOB), who stated that the penalties are determined disproportionately, indicated that if the penalties are implemented, businesses that do not issue receipts after a purchase could be forced to pay a fine of 10,000 TL for the first violation and up to 65,000 TL for subsequent violations.
A CHILD SENT TO THE CORNER STORE COULD BE FINED
Arguing that the penalty clauses are disproportionate and excessively high, TÜRMOB officials gave the following example regarding the disproportion between the penalty and the receipt amount:
“You sent your child to the corner store to buy bread. As the child was leaving the store after buying the bread, officials asked for their receipt. The child said they did not take the receipt. The fine to be applied is exactly 5,000 liras. In other words, your child, who went for bread, could return home with a 5,000 lira fine notice."
