Heirs take note: What happens to your credit card debt in the event of death?

Credit card debts are not automatically erased in the event of a person's death. The debts of the deceased are paid from their estate, and this can affect the assets that heirs receive. Debts are financial obligations that must be settled before the distribution of the inheritance.

Heirs take note: What happens to your credit card debt in the event of death?

What happens to your credit card debt and other financial obligations depends on factors such as the legal regulations of the country you live in, the amount of your assets, and whether your spouse is a joint account holder on the credit card.

Many people think that their debts will be automatically erased when they die, but this is a common misconception. Credit card debts are not among these exceptions, and the debt must be paid. Unpaid credit card debt is collected from the estate of the deceased, which can lead to a reduction in the assets remaining for the heirs.

According to a report by Nesli Leyla Şenol from Sözcü newspaper, if you have credit card debt when you pass away, this debt is paid from your estate. The estate refers to the movable and immovable assets you own, bank accounts, and other material values. Following death, your assets are transferred to the heirs through inheritance, which is a legal process.

'CREDIT CARD DEBT IS NOT DIRECTLY TRANSFERRED TO HEIRS'

In most cases, the executor specified in the deceased person's will is the person responsible for paying the debts.

In the event of your death, all your financial obligations, including your credit card debt, are covered by your estate. Credit card debt is not directly transferred to your heirs, but the payment of the debt is required before the inheritance is distributed.

Since credit cards are a tool through which individuals finance their personal expenses, life insurance generally does not cover this debt. However, if credit card debt coverage has been added to your insurance policy, the debt may be covered by the insurance company in the event of death.
