Market research from IPA: Istanbul surpasses London

The Istanbul Planning Agency (IPA) compared prices at the UK's largest supermarket chain, Sainsbury's, with those at a supermarket chain in Istanbul.

The study was based on 20 essential food items that should be in every kitchen.

IPA President Buğra Gökce shared the results of the comparison. Gökce stated, "While a minimum wage earner living in London can purchase these 20 products with only 3 percent of their salary, a minimum wage earner living in Istanbul has to spend 19 percent of their salary for the same products."

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MINIMUM WAGE EARNERS IN LONDON AND ISTANBUL

The difference between a minimum wage earner in London and one in Istanbul drew attention in the study.

Regarding the difference between a minimum wage earner living in London and one living in Istanbul, Gökce made the following remarks:

"While a minimum wage earner living in London can purchase these 20 products with only 3 percent of their salary, a minimum wage earner living in Istanbul has to spend 19 percent of their salary for the same products.

A minimum wage earner living in London can buy 296 kilograms of ground meat with their salary, while a minimum wage earner living in Istanbul can only buy 40 kilograms of ground meat with their salary.

A minimum wage earner living in London can buy 994 kilograms of chicken wings, 1,070 eggs, 3,093 liters of milk, and 2,896 packs of pasta with their salary, while a minimum wage earner living in Istanbul can only buy 57 kilograms of chicken wings, 425 liters of milk, and 871 packs of pasta."

Pointing out that there is a very serious food problem in Turkey, Gökce said, "This problem is not caused solely by high inflation. Production is also insufficient. Our people are paying the heavy price for the agricultural and livestock policies implemented for years."
