IPA reveals: What issue do citizens in Istanbul talk about most at home?

The Istanbul Planning Agency (IPA), affiliated with the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB), has published its "Istanbul Barometer June 2024" report, which takes the pulse of the public.

According to the report, participants talked about economic issues the most at home. While 69.2% of participants stated that they did not support the proposed 20% monthly rental tax, 34.9% stated that they were barely making ends meet.

The report, which takes the pulse of Istanbul residents on many topics, was prepared by interviewing 1,004 Istanbul residents over the phone.

According to the report, the economy was the main agenda in Istanbul in June. 53.8% of participants stated that economic issues were discussed at home.

34.9% OF PARTICIPANTS SAID THEY WERE BARELY MAKING ENDS MEET

69.2% of participants expressed that they did not support the proposed 20% monthly rental tax. The draft proposal, which suggests that 20% of the rent would be taxed each month and the remaining amount would go to the landlord, was not supported by 69.2% of the participants. 89.6% of the participants stated that they believe the implementation would lead to negative consequences.

If implemented, 42.2% of participants stated that they believe rental prices would increase, 17.5% said it would lead to economic problems, and 12.1% said it would create problems between tenants and landlords. 48% of tenants and 37% of landlords stated that rental prices would increase. 92.9% of tenants and 86.5% of landlords believe the implementation would have negative consequences. 34.9% of participants expressed the opinion that they were barely making ends meet.

The stress level of Istanbul residents was measured at 6.6, and the happiness level at 5.4.

58.4% of participants mentioned that economic issues were discussed. In second place was Israel's occupation of Gaza with 18.4%, and in third place was the Euro 2024 European Football Championship with 5%.

THOSE WHO THINK THE ECONOMY WILL WORSEN HAVE INCREASED

In June, 18.1% of participants stated that the Turkish economy would improve, while 37.3% said it would not change, and 44.6% stated that it would worsen.

Compared to the results of April, the rate of those who stated that the Turkish economy would worsen increased, while a decrease was observed in the rate of those who stated it would improve.
