Is a minimum wage hike coming? He gave a date

Economist Dr. Şeref Oğuz stated that there is talk in Ankara's political circles that a minimum wage hike is coming.

Speaking to ekonomim.com, Oğuz pointed out that the minimum wage has fallen below the hunger threshold announced by Türk-İş yesterday.

"THEY RECEIVED THE WARNING"

Stating that 'they have to make an increase,' Oğuz spoke as follows:

"The government received a warning from the public in the local elections. Its existence has become a matter of question. People cannot endure until 2028; they will melt away. Observers even give examples like this; you shoot a gazelle, and the wounded gazelle keeps running until it realizes it is dying. Using the analogy from the US, the government is in a 'lame duck' position. It is facing the loss of its base. It has fallen to the position of the second party. The minimum wage will have to be increased anyway due to reactions from the public and unemployment."

WHATEVER ERDOĞAN SAYS...

Evaluating the statements that there will be no minimum wage hike, Oğuz commented, "Although Minister of Treasury and Finance Mehmet Şimşek is strongly opposed to this, the President will have the final say. The minimum wage is outside the scope of Mehmet Şimşek and other ministers. This matter is entirely under the authority of President Erdoğan. Meanwhile, instead of increasing the coefficient for civil servants, you will be loading the cost of the burden of relieving society by increasing the minimum wage onto the private sector. The view that 'the private sector should finance this' is dominant. There is a Silifke folk song that goes, 'let everyone eat and drink from their own purse, I have my own reign'..."

IN THE THIRD QUARTER

Pointing out that there are 4-5 different studies on the minimum wage on the government's table, Dr. Şeref Oğuz said:

"I expect an increase in the minimum wage in the third quarter. They might leave it until September. I have obtained inside information that such calculations are being made; inflation will fall by 20-22 points due to the base effect, and then they will make an adjustment to the minimum wage. This will also relieve the employer, and at the same time, they will be able to say, 'Look, we gave a raise to the minimum wage.' There are 4-5 studies on the table. They are creating options for President Erdoğan."

WHAT DID MINISTER IŞIKHAN SAY?

Minister of Labor and Social Security Vedat Işıkhan had conveyed that the issue of an interim minimum wage hike was not on their agenda with the following words:

"There is no such issue on our agenda. The process will continue as it is, just as we decided at the beginning. In July, differences arising from inflation or contracts will be reflected in pension payments."
